Photobiomodulation

The therapeutic use of light energy in order to improve the metabolism of the tissues of the human body. Studies have shown that pain and inflammation can be measurably improved by the regular application of collimated (laser) light of a specific wavelengths, frequencies, intensity and duration.

Treat a variety of common health ailments non-invasively and effectively.

Decrease pain and inflammation.

Stimulating the body’s natural healing ability and increase tissue regeneration.

Totally painless.

Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Technology

Our 3B Scientific twelve channel Class 3B laser needle system (pictured right) is a revolutionary device that delivers a coherent stream of finely focused light energy into the body in order to create a healing response in the target tissues.  The system is ideal for stimulating acupuncture points using this pulsating infrared laser light. Treatments combine the latest advances in technology with the ancient wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The system can also be used to treat musculoskeletal issues like muscle pulls, arthritis, bursitis, tennis elbow, and knee pain. The treatments are completely non invasive, painless, brief and low cost.

The highly unique design of the 3B Scientific laser needle system connects the laser outputs on the unit to the patient’s body using fiberoptic cables that transmit the pulsating laser light to the acupuncture points or targeted tissues.   Treatments take less than 30 minutes and are completely painless – no needles are used.  The laser system can be programmed to pulse at specific frequencies for specific conditions or specific tissues. Laser light is delivered to the patients in doses of energy called Joules.  This dosage varies depending on the depth and type of tissues being treated.  Surface tissues (like acupuncture points) are commonly treated with 4-8 Joules which only takes a few minutes to deliver. The laser acupuncture system can also be used to provide healing light to muscles tendons, ligaments and joint capsules. These deeper tissues are typically treated with dosages of 20- 40 Joules which takes a little longer to deliver than treating acupuncture points at a lower dose but still only minutes. Laser acupuncture is a subtle form of holistic healing that stimulates the body’s own ability to heal itself and it typically requires multiple sessions to achieve full effectiveness.  A series of 5 sessions is considered one treatment.

Our Laser Therapy treatments involve brief therapy sessions using a handheld laser device that is focused on the target tissues.  Typical sessions last approximately 15 minutes can be done daily or every other day. 5 sessions constitute one course of treatment.

The process is entirely painless and low cost and is applicable to many different types of ailments, though the most common condition treated is musculoskeletal pain.

How does it Actually Work?

Light is essential to all living creatures on Earth.  The energy from the sun is what powers our planet, creating our weather and directly providing vital sustenance to the simple organisms at the foundation of our biosphere (plankton, algae, and plants) and indirectly feeding all the animals higher on the food chain that depend on the simpler life forms for food.  Even the power that we derive from fossil fuels originated as solar energy. Various forms of light have also been used therapeutically for many centuries. Laser therapy is also know as laser phototherapy or laser bio regulation. By using a beam of laser light focused into a very small spot we can activate acupuncture points.  Pictured in these photos is a twelve channel laser laser needle system which connects to points on the body using fiberoptic cables. Using this method of laser acupuncture, treatment time may be as little as twenty and is completely painless.  It is a more subtle form of treatment and may require multiple sessions for full effectiveness. Laser light is delivered to the patients in doses of energy called Joules.  This dosage varies depending on the depth and type of tissues being treated.  Surface tissues (like acupuncture points) are commonly treated with 4-8 Joules.  Deeper tissues may be treated with dosages of 20- 40 Joules. Laser systems of different wavelengths act upon different tissues – water, blood, bone and fat cells all absorb laser light at different rates at different wavelengths.  Lasers may also be pulsed at specific frequencies to resonate with particular biological tissues or organs.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Usually not. As energy is redirected in the body, internal chemicals and hormones are stimulated and healing begins to take place. Occasionally the original symptoms worsen for a few days. This should not cause concern, as they are simply indications that the therapy is starting to work. If this does happen please let your physician or therapist know and he or she will review your treatment plan and possibly lower your dosage.

Do The Lasers Hurt or Burn?

Not at all! Low level lasers (Class 3B) produce minimal heat and therefore are unlikely to cause any discomfort.  Note however, that dark skin or dark hair will absorb the laser light to a much greater degree and will heat up significantly faster.  People with very dark skin pigmentation are not good candidates for laser therapy with the systems that we currently employ.

Is Laser Therapy Covered by Health Insurance?

Some insurance companies currently cover acupuncture costs, other companies do not yet recognize the value of acupuncture. Each health policy must be reviewed to determine acupuncture benefits. More and more insurance companies are recognizing the value of providing coverage for medical acupuncture services. You can help by insisting that your insurance company offer you reimbursement for medically indicated acupuncture treatments before you accept their policy.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR APPOINTMENT

In the past 2,000 years, more people have been successfully treated with acupuncture than with all other health modalities combined. Today, acupuncture is practiced more and more by patients and physicians. Acupuncture treatments can be given at the same time other techniques are being used, such as conventional Western medicine, osteopathic or chiropractic adjustments, and homeopathic or naturopathic prescriptions. It is important that your acupuncturist knows everything that you are doing, so he or she can help you get the most benefit from all your treatments.

To enhance the value of a treatment, the following guidelines are important:

  • Eat moderately before your appointment
    • It is important that you eat before your treatment but do not eat an especially large meal immediately before or after your treatment.
  • Moderate activity 6 hours before or after
    • Do not over-exercise, engage in sexual activity, or consume alcoholic beverages within 6 hours after the treatment.
  • Plan time for rest and recovery
    • Plan your activities so that after the treatment you can get some rest, or at least not have to be working at top performance. This is especially important for the first few visits.
"Doc" Healy gave me a perfect acupuncture treatment. I was in bad shape coming from a complex cataract surgery experience. He centered me, and calmed me and I left deeply satisfied, an important next step in healing.
